“I have never had such a sense of humanity. You read about humanity in anthropology textbooks, have this concept of a line swiveling through history… but when it comes to real humanity, knowing that we are all individuals, together… Well, for me, that is rare.” (Chandra M., an audience member, 2010)

To model vulnerability, I show up naked (a 49-year-old female with inherent issues and flaws), unscripted, and sometimes non-verbal. I share my visceral human being-ness with the intention of creating open-heartedness, empathy, and authenticity. There is no narrative arc. Social norms are subverted.

In this challenging participative forum, we all become teacher and student, facilitator and performer, art and artist. It is an exercise in non-domination, solidarity, and shared responsibility.

I am not a trained performer. I am a mother who is motivated to take myself and my audience beyond culturally decreed and neurobiological comfort zones in an urgent attempt to teach and learn a different way to cohabit our fragile planet.

Humans will not survive unless we change the paradigm from competitive-compartmentalized to cooperative-connected. We have almost no models for this way of being.

To change requires experiential, embodied understanding—in our hearts, guts and bones—and goes against deeply ingrained neurobiological fight or flight responses and cultural/intellectual norms.

Many people have decided to join me naked in various Human Body Project performance spaces. I believe that eventually, when the time is right, we will take our embodied, experiential message to the streets.
